“My small art studio, Local Folk Creative Studio in Kutztown was a recipient of a CEAP grant in 2021. I opened my business in October of 2021, during the tail-end of the Covid-19 Pandemic. While this art studio was a longtime dream of mine, I worried that the timing wouldn’t be good due to economic issues, both on a personal and national level. The CEAP grant helped with start-up costs and also offset the cost of classes for children in my community. I’ve been able to offer dozens of $15 art classes ranging from painting to sewing over the last 9 months. The grant has helped me keep costs down as some of it went toward purchasing supplies like scissors, paint brushes, easels, canvases, and other materials. I’ve also been able to offer my art education services to a local childcare center at an even lower cost, especially since they are struggling financially in the current economy. My favorite class that I teach is called the Schnickelfritz Sewing Society, a free monthly meet-up for young stitchers who want to learn more about hand-sewing. Participants bring a project from home to work on or can engage in the activity I have for each session. Some things we’ve made are hair scrunchies, foraging bags, needle books, and our own stuffed animals. I love sharing my knowledge of and passion for sewing with younger generations.

My studio is also a haven for local artists and artisans. I sell items created in my immediate community, which gives talented locals a place to showcase their work. The grant has helped support the studio’s rent and utilities. It has helped create a place that fosters greater community bonds in Kutztown. Many of the locals who stop by to shop, take a class, or show their work have remarked on what a gem it is to our town. Having a place that supports local artisans and facilitates creative educational opportunities fills a void in Kutztown, especially since the town lacks a community center. The CEAP grant has supported my work in offering high-quality creative programs and has helped with my decision to continue into year two of this endeavor.”

From a customer:

“This is such a cute place! Great classes for adults and kids. They also have fun things from local artists and craft folk. This is just what Kutztown needed.”
